Lower Modikhola Hydel Project Starts Construction

Parbat, Aug. 24: Bringing cheer to Nepali people, construction of the biggest hydroelectric project built by Nepal has finally started.

The 10-MW Lower Modikhola Hydropower Project based at Chuwa VDC in Parbat district features domestic investment and technology.

The Rs. 1.66 billion project has completed the 90 percent task of land acquisition located between its intake and powerhouse.  

An access road leading to the intake has already been constructed, while another rough road to connect powerhouse is under construction. 

Similarly, an oil store, which can stockpile 28,000 liters of fuel, has already constructed and construction of another will start soon. 

The project has also made an agreement with Thadopakha Community Forest. However, the swollen Modi River has hampered some works.

"Construction has begun in full gear. We will work in the river as soon as the water level of the Modi subsides," said project director Upendra Gautam. "Provided that time supports us, the project will be completed on time."

Four financial institutions have already signed an agreement to provide loan for it. Construction of the project is jointly invested by the Rastriya Banijaya Bank, three development banks and another finance company. The agreement states that they banks would be channeling Rs. 1.25 billion.

Apart from the banks, the District Development Committee, Parbat, the VDC and DANIDA will also contribute financial assistance for the project. RSS
